Digital Photo Restoration Services & Image Retouching

Photographs are a gateway to memories. They help us commemorate important events, celebrate life and cherish the bonds of family. Unfortunately, physical photos often bend, tear, warp, incur water damage, and become bleached by sunlight over the years. This wear and tear is reversible with the right digital photo restoration experts on your side.

Jonathan Fanning Studio & Gallery has over 13 years of experience in restoring old photographs and has experienced working on photographs as old as the Civil War. Our team restores your worn photos to their former glory by using state-of-the-art digital technology and our techniques. We first start with a high resolution scan using our professional photo scanner to digitize it and then begin using our special techniques to bring your photograph back to life by color correcting fading photographs due to sun damage or age, filling in damage spots, tears, bends, and cracks. When we are bringing an old black and white photograph to color, we will ask if the hair, eye color, and clothing color are known. If not, we will do some research based on that time period and how the colors have shifted to make a well educated guess.

Frequently Asked Questions About Photo Restoration

How long does the process take?
Once we receive your photograph to be restored, it will typically take a week to week and a half for a proof. Once approved, we will process your print and schedule a pick-up or mail your print back to you within a few days.

Can you rush my order?

Can you colorize my photo?
Absolutely! Our team excels at turning an old black and white or sepia photograph to color. We will ask you for some basic colors such as eye and hair color and if you remember the colors of the clothing. If you are unsure, we will do some research, based on that particular time period of the photograph to make an educated guess on coloring.

What type of photo paper is my new restored photograph printed on?

We use Kodak Professional archival photo paper with a luster (matte) finish.

Is my photo too damaged to be restored?

We strive to be the very best at restoring photographs and are very skilled in many different scenarios, however, there are many things that we can do and there are many things that we cannot. If there is extensive damage to facial features such as eyes, mouth, nose, it can be very challenging to make the restored version of the photograph look realistic. Although, in some cases we are able to take facial features from another photo and digitally add it to the damaged one. If the original photograph is out of focus, we can sharpen it some, but will never be tac-sharp. In these cases, we typically do not recommend enlarging your restored copy to make it less noticeable to the naked eye. Send us your photo and we will be happy to give you our honest opinion.

What resolution should I scan my photo?

For best results we recommend mailing us your original photograph, but if you do not feel comfortable, please provide us with a scan of your original at 300 dots per inch (DPI) with no scanner software alterations such as color, brightness, etc.

What if I’m not happy with the restoration?

We will provide up to 3 revisions to your restoration to get it just right and customer satisfaction is our number one priority. We will give you an honest opinion on if we can restore your photo as there are many things that we can do, but there are a few things we cannot fix.
We do have one exception to our money back guarantee. Occasionally when quoting a restoration, we advise a customer that the damage to their photo is too extensive for us to achieve a level of restoration we would consider satisfaction. If the customer requests that we give it a try anyway, we will do our best as always, but cannot offer a money back guarantee.
