Canadian Passport Photo Requirements

Clearwater Canadian Passport Photographer

Canadian Passport Photo Guidelines

Canadian passport photos have very strict guidelines. At Jonathan Fanning Photography, we are familiar with these requirements and can provide you with passport photos tailored to their exact specifications.

Here are the following requirements as of March 2023:

  • Photographed by a professional photographer.
  • 50 mm wide X 70 mm high (2 inches wide X 2 3/4 inches long) and sized so the height of the face measures between 31 mm (1 1/4 inches) and 36 mm (1 7/16 inches) from chin to crown of head (natural top of head).
  • In focus, clear, and sharp. Photo may be in color or black and white.
  • With a neutral facial expression (eyes open, mouth closed, no smiling).
  • Light is uniform, glare and flash reflections are not present.
  • Photographed straight on, square to the camera, with the face and shoulders centered.
  • Your face should be clearly distinguishable from the background when taken against a plain white or light-colored background. Natural skin tones must be reflected/represented in the photo.
  • Original photo that has not been altered or taken from existing photographs.
  • Your current appearance (taken within the last 12 months).
  • A professional photo printed on plain, high quality photographic paper
  • Photographer must clearly write or stamp on the back of one photo with:
    • Date the photo was taken
    • Name and complete address of the photo studio
  • Your guarantor must clearly write:
    • “I certify this to be a true likeness of (applicant’s name)” for an application
    • Sign the back of the photo

Child Photo for Canadian Passport

For children, the same rules apply, however, accommodations are made for newborns.

A newborn baby can be photographed in a car seat as long as a white blanket covers the seat behind their head. Shadows should not be present on the face, shoulders, around the ears, or in the background.

Note:  The photo must not show the hands of the parent or child.

What to Avoid the Day of Your Photo

  • Glasses, even tinted prescription glasses, may be worn in photos as long as they are clearly visible and do not have glare. Sunglasses are unacceptable.
  • Avoid shadows. In order to avoid shadows on the face, shoulders, ears, or in the background, the lighting must be uniform.
  • It is not permitted to wear hats or head coverings, unless they are worn every day for religious or medical reasons. However, the head covering must not cast any shadows on your face or obscure your full face.
  • We recommend wearing darker colors to create a contrast from the background

At Jonathan Fanning Studio & Gallery, we are aware of these strict standards and ensure that your passport photo will meet all Canadian passport photo requirements.
