How Your Surprise Proposal Photography Session Works

Planning a proposal already comes with enough nerves. Working with a proposal photographer should make the moment easier, not more complicated.

The process starts with your date, location idea, timing, and the kind of proposal you’re planning. If you already know the exact spot, we’ll talk through where you should stand, where Jonathan can stay hidden, and how to keep the moment natural. If you’re still choosing a location, you’ll get guidance based on lighting, privacy, scenery, and how the proposal will unfold.

Once the plan is set, your session is reserved with a retainer. On the day of the proposal, Jonathan photographs the moment discreetly, then steps in afterward for engagement photos while the excitement is still fresh.

Final images are delivered through a private digital gallery. Keep the current turnaround language, but make it consistent across the page. The process section says delivery is within 1 business day, while the FAQ says 1 to 2 business days.

Why St. Pete-Clearwater Couples Hire Jonathan As Their Proposal Photographer

A surprise proposal goes by in a heartbeat. The timing has to work, the location has to be perfect, and the photographer has to be close enough to capture the reaction without giving away the surprise.

Jonathan has photographed hundreds of proposals and has been a professional photographer since 2007. That experience helps when the plan needs to look casual, the lighting changes, the location gets busy, or the timing shifts by a few minutes.

You’ll get help with planning, discreet coverage during the proposal, engagement portraits afterward, and a private gallery of finished images. Your images are also backed up in-camera, on local drives, and in cloud storage, so the moment is protected after it’s captured.

Proposal & Engagement Photography Pricing

Surprise proposal photography starts at $650 for up to one hour of coverage. That includes planning coordination, discreet positioning, the proposal itself, post-proposal engagement portraits, and a gallery of high-resolution images delivered by digital download with full print rights.

Travel fees and holiday rates may apply.

Kind Words from Proposal Clients

Jonathan basically came out of the bushes to get beautiful (surprise) photos of my fiancé proposing to me! He was so kind and helped take the awkward edge off of posing for photos in public by guiding us with his great suggestions. We received the photos quite rapidly and they turned out amazing. The format we received the photos in was very user friendly and well-explained. Ryan and I look forward to working with him again in our exciting future wedding photos! – Ryan & Marilyn

I hired Jonathan at the recommendation of a friend to capture a proposal for me. I’m very glad I did. He was instrumental in picking out a location to have a surprise proposal pulled off in public without the feel of being in public. He met with me a few days before and we went around Downtown St. Pete to a few different locations. We talked about logistics and what I wanted from the evening for my fiancée. He was able to listen to what I had in mind and help show me places where we could make it happen. During the proposal he was out of sight and located in an excellent position to capture her reaction. After the initial candid shot of the proposal he came up and congratulated us, introduced himself to my new fiancé and directed us through another little photo shoot. He made us at ease and helped guide us into positions and poses that made for some excellent pictures. We couldn’t be happier with our experience. The pictures turned out great and were available to us within 48 hours. He is very reasonably priced for the service and quality you will receive. – Brad

Thank you so much! These are amazing and just what we were looking for. We haven’t stopped talking about how professional and great you were with everything you put into making this day perfect for us. Thank you again! – Mike & Shari

“I recommend Jonathan wholeheartedly. We worked with him for a proposal and engagement photo shoot and he was excellent. On time (early in fact) to the proposal to capture the special moment, then very professional for the post-question pictures. The images achieved an impressive balance of capturing our emotions in the moment while still maintaining a “professional photo shoot” quality. Overall, Jonathan was excellent to work with and I recommend him to anyone.” Spencer

Frequently Asked Questions about Surprise Proposal Photography

What is the difference between proposal photography and engagement photos?

Proposal photography captures the surprise itself. Engagement photos are planned portraits taken after the proposal. We typically take portraits immediately followed by the proposal.

Can you help me choose a proposal location?

Yes. Location guidance is part of the planning process, especially if you want the proposal to feel natural, private, and well-timed.

How do we keep the proposal a surprise without making it feel staged?

The plan is worked out in advance, so the moment still feels real. That includes timing, positioning, and how the proposal will unfold. We are masters at blending in so as not to spoil the surprise.

Do you provide any props or set up for my proposal?

Unfortunately, we do not provide any setup or props. However, we can recommend several floral and décor companies.

What happens if my timing changes or the weather shifts?

Proposal plans can be adjusted when needed. We can talk through backup timing, location changes, or other options if the situation changes.

Does the session include portraits after the proposal?

Usually, yes. Most couples want the surprise captured first, and then a short portrait session right afterward, provided it falls within the allotted time.

How quickly will we get the photos?

Turnaround is 1–2 business days. Rush delivery is available.
