Looks matter. And when you’re a professional, or trying to become a professional, they really matter. And it matters most when you’re thinking about getting a headshot. Your headshot must speak volumes about you in one image – your personality, your professionalism, your dedication, your experience – and so that image must be a good one. You may look good in a thousand pictures you take of yourself with your iPod but getting a good professional headshot is about more than looking good.
Nicole knows this and it was a pleasure to help this wonderful young woman on the road to her dream by being the photographer for her headshot. Nicole has an amazing story. She is seventeen and an aspiring opera singer. “I have a passion for singing,” she said. “I have been singing since the age of six and performing for a long time. There is nothing more I love to do than sing. I have made the decision to pursue classical singing and therefore I have decided to apply to conservatories for college, majoring in vocal performance. Apart from applying to conservatories I am a member of young artists’ programs and youth opera companies. These programs are for aspiring young opera singers who are constantly auditioning for roles and competitions.” And competition is fierce. Though she’s been singing and performing for years she still has a long way to go. But, like anything that matters, it’s worth the fight.
“I had my photo taken for various auditions in operas. I also need to have my photos taken so that I can send the schools I will be applying to head shots of myself,” she said. She knows the value of a good headshot. Especially in the entertainment industry, a headshot can mean the difference between getting the part or not. They must also show your personality and professionalism. This is why you must also find a photographer who you like and who works with you in order to really find out who you are and what you want your headshot to say.
“Many photographers with whom I have worked with in the past have been impatient and very picky with what I do with myself,” said Nicole. “You are very patient and creative! You did a very nice job with spacing and background and I will definitely come back when I need more pictures. I would recommend you to my family members in Tampa . . . because you make the experience fun and not overwhelming. My favorite experience was choosing all the wonderful pictures at the end to make a portfolio.”
I wanted Nicole’s photographs to reflect the serious, talented, and fun young woman that she is. I have no doubt that she’s going to succeed in her dream and it was great to be a part of that. It was so much fun working with her and getting to know her.
“There is nothing more I love to do than sing because you have the opportunity to touch the audience in any way possible. Going on stage is an amazing experience and I cannot wait to go to college and do what I love most for the rest of my life.”
Good luck, Nicole!
